How Beatrice, Nebraska Got Its Name (And Why It's Bee-AT-riss)

Beatrice, Nebraska, is named for Julia Beatrice Kinney, the daughter of a judge who helped found the town in 1857. Locals say bee-AT-riss, because that’s how she said her own name.
Where the name comes from
A 1925 study of Nebraska place names says the town “was named on July 4, 1857, in honor of Miss Julia Beatrice Kinney, the eldest daughter of Judge J. F. Kinney.” It describes her father as chief justice of the supreme court of Utah in 1853, and later a congressman from Utah, in 1863. The U.S. Geological Survey’s place-name record gives the same date and the same namesake. The city of Beatrice says she was 17 at the time, and that her father was one of the settlers.
The city’s history page says the founders were a group of pioneers from St. Louis who came up the Missouri River on the steamer Hannibal. History Nebraska’s guide to the Kinney family papers adds a twist: Judge Kinney never lived in the town named for his daughter. He took his family on to Nebraska City instead.
History Nebraska, which holds the town company’s minute book, puts the choice a little earlier. It says the members voted on two names on May 5, 1857, and “Beatrice” beat “Wheatland,” 16 to 9.
Why it’s bee-AT-riss
The usual English name is said BEE-uh-triss, but the town isn’t. The 1925 study explains why: “Contrary to the usual pronunciation of the name Be’-a-trice, the local pronunciation is Be-at’-rice, because Miss Kinney’s name was pronounced in this way.” In other words, the town says it the way she did.
